Shelter … think of a time when you needed shelter or sought shelter. The word ‘shelter’ means “place of safety, protection, a refuge or haven.” In other words, a place that is safe for you. A couple of days ago we were up in the Carson National Forest, beautiful scenery. We went through a little town called El Rito to get there. There was a very old mission, built in 1827, called The Church of San Juan Nepomuceno. Its walls are 5 feet thick, and in the frontier days it sheltered people from both outlaw harm, and bad weather. It also gave “shelter” for their hearts–a place to come and pray and worship. It still stands beautifully today, continuing its “sheltering” for all those in need and seeking God’s peace and wisdom. Isn’t that just where God is? Psalm 91: 1-2, reminds us that Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” May you seek and find the shelter you need in the love of God–maybe just in a little old mission church in El Rito! The doors still stand open for all who need to come!
