“First of all, I ask that you pray for all people. Ask God to bless them and give them what they need. And give thanks. You should pray for rulers and for all who have authority. Pray for these leaders so that we can live quiet and peaceful lives—lives full of devotion to God and respect for him. This is good and pleases God our Savior. God wants everyone to be saved and to fully understand the truth.” -1 Timothy 2:1-4 ERV
A Time to Think…a Christian Perspective
I believe President’s Day is a good time to look back at the history of past U.S. presidents. Flawed as they may be, and as we are I might add, they hold some unique individual histories before and while holding office, but even the past U.S. presidents, whether they believed or not declared in 2 Corinthians 5:10: “must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.” According to several Scriptures, “they will be held to a higher standard and be held more accountable than most of us will be, because where much responsibility is given, much will be required…” God’s name might not appear in the U.S. Constitution per se but many of the framers of our Constitution believed in Psalm 50:6: “the heavens proclaim his righteousness, for he is a God of justice.” God doesn’t create a “religious nation” but God does create a nation to pursue God for the good of the people everywhere. It is our choice to believe in God or not.” -Jack Wellman, Pastor
A Time to Act…
On this day we need to honor the presidents our country has had no matter what we think of them. God calls us to bless them so let’s do so. God calls us to pray for them so let’s do so. It is in obeying God’s call we rise up together instead of the divisions we squabble with. So let us pray: O Lord, send Your Spirit to touch the hearts of our Nation’s Leaders. Give them Wisdom and Courage, AMEN.
