How Sturdy Is Your Foundation? … Hello Hump Day readers. The word ‘foundation’ means that something stands or is supported and also an underlying base or support—something that can be a sturdy foundation. We all have had those times when a foundation broke and that can be a lot of things for sure.
Think of the Leaning Tower of Pisa which is slowly leaning more and more. Scientists travel yearly to measure the slow descent. They report that the 179-foot tower moves about a twentieth of an inch every year and is now 17 feet out of plumb (my dad was a builder and something like that would have given him a stroke!). If it hadn’t been for counterweights installed, bells removed from the tower, and safety cables harnessed, most believe it would have fallen years ago.
Here is the Current Status of the tower in March 2026:
- The Tilt: The tower leans at an angle of about 3.97 degrees.
- Safety: Major engineering work between 1993 and 2001 reduced the lean by about 19 inches and made the structure secure.
- Stability: Experts say the monument is safe and stable, and it has even straightened slightly on its own over time!
Significantly, the word Pisa in Italian actually means “marshy land,” an interesting thing to consider when you think about the fact that the foundation of the tower is only 10 feet deep! It’s no wonder, then, that the building is living on borrowed time. And that is also for us! How much borrowed time do we have?
The Apostle Paul tells us about the power of foundations for our lives… “The quality of materials used by anyone building on this foundation will soon be made apparent, whether it has been built with gold, silver, and costly stones, or wood, hay, and straw. Their work will soon become evident, for the Day will make it clear, because it will be revealed by blazing fire! And the fire will test and prove the workmanship of each builder. If his work stands the test of fire, he will be rewarded.” 1 Corinthians 3:11-13 [TPT]
Like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, when a foundation is shallow, the building will collapse. And what’s true in architecture is also true in our spiritual lives! When we have a shallow spiritual foundation that doesn’t dig deep into the ground, our spirituality will waver and falter when hard times hit—then what do we do? Well, here is the answer:
If you want to have a faith that’s unshakeable you must build your life’s foundation on the person of Jesus Christ and no others!
We live in waverly times…while the world may shift and sway, our spiritual foundation will remain strong when we make Jesus the basis of everything we do—yes EVERYTHING!!
In closing, think of a time when your spiritual foundation was tested. How did it hold up? What did you do to keep it on a foundation? And how might your life look differently if you built everything on the rock-solid foundation of our precious Lord?
O Lord, I pray and ask that you help me make Jesus the center in every aspect of my life. Help me to stay on the perfect foundation you have for me, AMEN.
