God Loves Our Questions! …Hello Hump Day readers. Al and I are enjoying our time off in northern Colorado. Lots of families and kids! I let the park know that I’m a chaplain and a few days later a young girl brought me a picture of God and asked me “is this what God looks like, I don’t want it to be bad.” I told her it was wonderful and God would love it, then she asked me “do you think God likes my questions, I don’t want to pester God.” Oh the joy of a child! I told her God loves our questions and off she went happy and joyful.

So dear readers, what do you think of it? Do we wear down God with millions of questions or not? Here’s what a Sunday school teacher did gave the assignment for the kids to write down any questions they had for God. Get ready for a belly laugh and pure joy…

Dear God…
*Did you make the giraffe to look like that, or was it an accident?
*I like the Lord’s Prayer best. Did You get it right the first time? I have to write everything over and over again ugh.
*Thank You for my baby brother You gave to us, but what I prayed for was a puppy.
*How come You haven’t invented any new animals lately? I’m tired of the old ones.
*I bet it’s hard for You to love everybody in the whole world. There are only four people in my family, and I just can’t do it, my brothers drive me crazy.
*In school we learned read that Thomas Edison made light, but in Sunday school, they said that you made it. I think he stole your idea.
*How did you know you were God? Who told you?
*My Grandpa says you were around when he was a little boy. How far back do you go?
*If you watch in church on Sunday, I will show you my new shoes.
*Do you draw the lines around the countries? If you don’t, who does?

Whether you are new in your faith or came out of the womb with faith, we all have questions for God—some even have suggestions for God! The questions may be tough, impolite, silly, etc.—but ask anyway. God understands that we are humans and we have questions. When our desire moves forward with God in faith, we have genuine questions and that’s OK!

A question I always love is Mary’s response to Gabriel’s announcement. Her response was natural: “How will this happen? I am still a virgin.” [Luke 1:34]

And then there is David, closer to God than just about everyone at that time. He was called “a man after God’s own heart” yet he had questions. In Psalm 13:1-2 David asked “How long will you forget me, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you refuse to accept me? How long must I wonder if you have forgotten me? How long must I feel this sadness in my heart? How long will my enemy win against me?” David poured out his soul to God because he knew God would hear his questions for what they were. We can do the same.

We have all kinds of questions for God and the apostle James offers this advice: “Do any of you need wisdom? Ask God for it. He is generous and enjoys giving to everyone. So he will give you wisdom. But when you ask God, you must believe. Don’t doubt him. Whoever doubts is like a wave in the sea that is blown up and down by the wind.” [James 1:5–6 ERV]

We can learn a lot from the children’s questions. They had no hesitation asking God their questions so neither should we. God welcomes our questions because the more answers you receive, the stronger your faith will grow. To me, that is definitely a “win-win!”
