Four Ways Angels Serve Us—Daily! … Hello Hump Day Angel readers!!  So we’ve learned that angels support us and can stop us, using two interesting episodes in the Old Testament. Now we will look at Four Ways Angels Serve us. Stopping and supporting is part of this but here’s more:

Angels Minister to the Saints. You and I are the saints, along with millions of other saints. In Hebrews 1:14 we read “What are the angels, then? They are spirits who serve God and are sent by him to help those who are to receive salvation.” That is why we DO NOT pray or bow down to them. When John was taken up to the Revelation, he fell down to worship at the feet of the angel, but the angel declared: “No, don’t worship me. I am a servant of God—just like you are … worship God only!” [Rev. 22:8-9a] Sadly, virtual reality, AI, etc., are making people wonder what is real and some turn to angels. Remember that angels are agents, making everything work together for good under God’s providence.

Angels Execute God’s Will. Everyone has a different idea of what an angel is, and usually they are wrong! Scripture has it right: angels are “mighty ones.” They’re not baby-like, chubby cherubs with wings. They are colossal, tremendous in power, active agents who do whatever God commands. In Psalm 103:20-21 [NLT], King David says: “Praise the Lord, you angels, you mighty ones who carry out his plans, listening for each of his commands. Yes, praise the Lord, you armies of angels who serve him and do his will!” So, it seems that we can infer from this that God has created an abundance of doers of his will at multiple levels: Inanimate objects, Animals, Humans, and Angels!

Angels Magnify the Grandeur of God. In one week we will once again hear the mighty choir of angels singing over the Baby Jesus, their song winding around the world. Back in Daniels’ day he saw a picture of God in heaven with one hundred million angels standing before him. That’s breathtaking—and that’s the point. God created millions upon millions of angels as a fitting, regal, royal assembly for his magnificence. So, angels exist in their grandeur and also in their humble obedience and in their vast numbers to call attention to the greatness of the God they serve. We can learn a lot from angels, can’t we?

Angels Call Attention to the Worth of Every Believer. This is what should capture our hearts about angels. Everyone is worthy, the angels never discount God’s children at all, yay! Now here’s one last text that’s perhaps the most unusual of all. Jesus says “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.” [Matthew 18:10 ESV] John Piper puts it this way: “What in the world did Jesus mean by that? Well, the “little ones” refer to believers, childlike—real Christians who are easily despised and made fun of in this world. And I think what he is saying is this: every Christian from the simplest to the lowliest has an entourage of titans, angels!—colossal, glorious beings who stand in the most privileged position in the universe before the face of God, always ready to do God’s bidding at any time on behalf of those despised Christians. So, do not to despise any of Jesus’ children. Heavenly titans are in God’s service on their behalf in the very place of privilege before His face.”

In closing, I hope we all can embrace these incredible words and descriptions of the gift of angels God has given us. May we also be reminded that Christmas is wonderful but it is not the only time for the gifts of angels. They are surrounding us daily as God gives them their duties. You may not see or feel them, but they are real and they are there in any situation that God sends them to. They come using the gifts that Jesus brought on Christmas: hope, joy, peace, and love. Don’t bow down to them…just say “Thank You!” and bow down to Jesus, the Savior of your life and the Savior for the whole World, AMEN.
